RESUMEN

Recent advances in Deep Learning and aerial Light Detection And Ranging (LiDAR) have offered the possibility of refining the classification and segmentation of 3D point clouds to contribute to the monitoring of complex environments. In this context, the present study focuses on developing an ordinal classification model in forest areas where LiDAR point clouds can be classified into four distinct ordinal classes: ground, low vegetation, medium vegetation, and high vegetation. To do so, an effective soft labeling technique based on a novel proposed generalized exponential function (CE-GE) is applied to the PointNet network architecture. Statistical analyses based on Kolmogorov-Smirnov and Student's t-test reveal that the CE-GE method achieves the best results for all the evaluation metrics compared to other methodologies. Regarding the confusion matrices of the best alternative conceived and the standard categorical cross-entropy method, the smoothed ordinal classification obtains a more consistent classification compared to the nominal approach. Thus, the proposed methodology significantly improves the point-by-point classification of PointNet, reducing the errors in distinguishing between the middle classes (low vegetation and medium vegetation).

Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) have been used in a multitude of real-world applications given their predictive capabilities, and algorithms based on gradient descent, such as Backpropagation (BP) and variants, are usually considered for their optimisation. However, these algorithms have been shown to get stuck at local optima, and they require a cautious design of the architecture of the model. This paper proposes a novel memetic training method for simultaneously learning the ANNs structure and weights based on the Coral Reef Optimisation algorithms (CROs), a global-search metaheuristic based on corals' biology and coral reef formation. Three versions based on the original CRO combined with a Local Search procedure are developed: (1) the basic one, called Memetic CRO; (2) a statistically guided version called Memetic SCRO (M-SCRO) that adjusts the algorithm parameters based on the population fitness; (3) and, finally, an improved Dynamic Statistically-driven version called Memetic Dynamic SCRO (M-DSCRO). M-DSCRO is designed with the idea of improving the M-SCRO version in the evolutionary process, evaluating whether the fitness distribution of the population of ANNs is normal to automatically decide the statistic to be used for assigning the algorithm parameters. Furthermore, all algorithms are adapted to the design of ANNs by means of the most suitable operators. The performance of the different algorithms is evaluated with 40 classification datasets, showing that the proposed M-DSCRO algorithm outperforms the other two versions on most of the datasets. In the final analysis, M-DSCRO is compared against four state-of-the-art methods, demonstrating its superior efficacy in terms of overall accuracy and minority class performance.

Real-world classification problems may disclose different hierarchical levels where the categories are displayed in an ordinal structure. However, no specific deep learning (DL) models simultaneously learn hierarchical and ordinal constraints while improving generalization performance. To fill this gap, we propose the introduction of two novel ordinal-hierarchical DL methodologies, namely, the hierarchical cumulative link model (HCLM) and hierarchical-ordinal binary decomposition (HOBD), which are able to model the ordinal structure within different hierarchical levels of the labels. In particular, we decompose the hierarchical-ordinal problem into local and global graph paths that may encode an ordinal constraint for each hierarchical level. Thus, we frame this problem as simultaneously minimizing global and local losses. Furthermore, the ordinal constraints are set by two approaches ordinal binary decomposition (OBD) and cumulative link model (CLM) within each global and local function. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is measured on four real-use case datasets concerning industrial, biomedical, computer vision, and financial domains. The extracted results demonstrate a statistically significant improvement to state-of-the-art nominal, ordinal, and hierarchical approaches.

Our knowledge of the systematics of the papilionoid legume tribe Brongniartieae has greatly benefitted from recent advances in molecular phylogenetics. The tribe was initially described to include species marked by a strongly bilabiate calyx and an embryo with a straight radicle, but recent research has placed taxa from the distantly related core Sophoreae and Millettieae within it. Despite these advances, the most species-rich genera within the Brongniartieae are still not well studied, and their morphological and biogeographical evolution remains poorly understood. Comprising 35 species, Harpalyce is one of these poorly studied genera. In this study, we present a comprehensive, multi-locus molecular phylogeny of the Brongniartieae, with an increased sampling of Harpalyce, to investigate morphological and biogeographical evolution within the group. Our results confirm the monophyly of Harpalyce and indicate that peltate glandular trichomes and a strongly bilabiate calyx with a carinal lip and three fused lobes are synapomorphies for the genus, which is internally divided into three distinct ecologically and geographically divergent lineages, corresponding to the previously recognized sections. Our biogeographical reconstructions demonstrate that Brongniartieae originated in South America during the Eocene, with subsequent pulses of diversification in South America, Mesoamerica, and Australia. Harpalyce also originated in South America during the Miocene at around 20 Ma, with almost synchronous later diversification in South America and Mexico/Mesoamerica beginning 10 Ma, but mostly during the Pliocene. Migration of Harpalyce from South to North America was accompanied by a biome and ecological shift from savanna to seasonally dry forest.

BACKGROUND: Mobbing, particularly in medical residencies, can lead to psychological terror with lasting mental and physical health consequences. Its impact on Mexican residents, however, remains underexplored. AIM: This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and associated factors of psychological terror among medical residents at a medical center in Mexico City. METHODS: In a cross-sectional study, medical residents from various specialties were assessed for mobbing domains, quality of life, and anxiety/depression using the Leymann Inventory of Psychological Terror (LIPT), 36-Item Short Form Health Survey, Beck Depression Inventory-II, and Beck Anxiety Inventory, respectively. Psychological terror was defined as a LIPT score ≥ p80. Linear and binomial logistic regression models were used to explore independent predictors of mobbing and psychological terror. RESULTS: Of the 349 participants included (median age: 28; IQR: 27-30 years), 19.5% (95% CI: 15.5%-24.0%) were identified with psychological terror. Furthermore, 39% reported higher-degree trainees as mobbing perpetrators. Women in surgical residencies in their second or fifth year were found to experience higher levels of mobbing. Manifested bullying, workplace stigma, and inappropriate tasks were the most impacted mobbing domains. Anxiety, diminished mental health quality of life, and higher degree of medical specialization were independent predictors of mobbing. Meanwhile, increased anxiety, affiliation to surgical specialties, and being in the second or fifth year of training were identified as predictors of psychological terror. CONCLUSIONS: Mobbing and psychological terror are prevalent conditions among medical residents in Mexico. Identification of occupational conditions and adverse psychological stressors can help to improve quality of life and training of medical residents.

Introducción En los estudios multicéntricos la protocolización de los datos es una fase crítica que puede generar sesgos, sobre todo en estudios clínicos con presupuesto limitado. El objetivo es analizar la concordancia y la confiabilidad de los datos obtenidos en un estudio multicéntrico clínico entre la protocolización del centro de origen y la protocolización centralizada mediante un data-manager. Método Estudio clínico multicéntrico de prevalencia nacional sobre un carcinoma familiar infrecuente, realizándose una doble protocolización de los datos: a)en el centro de origen, y b)centralizada con un data-manager. La concordancia se analiza para el global de los datos y para los dos subgrupos del proyecto: a)grupo a estudio (carcinoma familiar; protocolizan 30 investigadores) y b)grupo control (carcinoma esporádico; protocolizan 4). Las diferencias interobservador se evalúan mediante el índice de Kappa de Cohen. Resultados Se incluyen 689 pacientes: 252 del grupo a estudio y 437 del grupo control. Respecto al análisis de concordancia del estadio tumoral, se han objetivado un 2,5% de discordancias, siendo alta la concordancia entre protocolizadores (Kappa=0,931). Respecto a la valoración del riesgo de recidiva, las discordancias fueron del 7% de los casos, siendo alta la concordancia (Kappa=0,819). Respecto a la clasificación ecográfica TIRADS, las discordancias son del 6,9% y la concordancia es alta (Kappa=0,922). Se han detectado un 4,6% de errores de transcripción. Conclusiones En los estudios multicéntricos clínicos la protocolización centralizada de los datos por un data-manager parece presentar resultados similares a la protocolización directa en la base de datos en el centro de origen. Conclusions In multicenter clinical studies, the centralized data protocolization by a data-manager seems to present similar results to the direct protocolization in the database in the center of origin. BACKGROUND: The shortage of available transplant organs has made it necessary to search for alternatives, one of which is xenotransplantation. However, the use of animal organs could face rejection from society and the personnel involved in its implementation. OBJECTIVES: (a) to analyze the attitudes of Veterinary Degree students in six Spanish Universities towards xenotransplantation; and (b) to determine the factors that affect its acceptance. METHODS: Of the 2815 students surveyed in the degree program, 2683 valid surveys were obtained. Attitudes towards organ xenotransplantation were evaluated using a validated questionnaire of organ donation. RESULTS: If xenotransplantation was confirmed as a clinical reality, 93% (n = 2493) of those surveyed would accept a xenotransplanted organ, whilst 7% would not. If the results of xenotransplantation were worse than those obtained with human donors and it entailed more risk, 12% (n = 318) would be in favor. 56% (n = 1497) of the students would accept a xenotransplantation provisionally pending the arrival of a human organ. Attitudes towards xenotransplantation were affected by the academic year in which a student was studying, with more favorable attitudes among students in the last year (88% in first year vs. 95% in fifth year; p < .001). More favorable attitudes are also observed depending on the attitude they have towards organ transplantation, with those students being more in favor of donating their organs when they die (94% vs. 88%; p < .001). CONCLUSION: Veterinary students would have a very favorable attitude toward xenotransplantation if these animal organs functioned as well as human organs. Therefore, these students could play an important role in the future promotion of this technique.

Processive transport by the microtubule motor cytoplasmic dynein requires the regulated assembly of a dynein-dynactin-adapter complex. Interactions between dynein and dynactin were initially ascribed to the dynein intermediate chain N-terminus and the dynactin subunit p150Glued. However, recent cryo-EM structures have not resolved this interaction, questioning its importance. The intermediate chain also interacts with Nde1/Ndel1, which compete with p150Glued for binding. We reveal that the intermediate chain N-terminus is a critical evolutionarily conserved hub that interacts with dynactin and Ndel1, the latter of which recruits LIS1 to drive complex assembly. In additon to revealing that the intermediate chain N-terminus is likely bound to p150Glued in active transport complexes, our data support a model whereby Ndel1-LIS1 must dissociate prior to LIS1 being handed off to dynein in temporally discrete steps. Our work reveals previously unknown steps in the dynein activation pathway, and provide insight into the integrated activities of LIS1/Ndel1 and dynactin/cargo-adapters.

Two new species of Harpalyce are described from Cuba, H.revolutasp. nov. from a serpentine area in the northern part of E. Cuba and H.marianensissp. nov. from calcareous areas in the southern part of E. Cuba. Both have relatively small flowers, with an up to 6 mm long standard, and 2-3 mm long wings. Harpalycemarianensis is further characterized by strongly suberous (corky) young branches of a spongy consistence, deeply furrowed longitudinally, and by leaflets covered with a particular type of orange, apparently disk-shaped, sessile glands abaxially. Harpalycerevoluta, moreover, has suborbicular or broadly elliptic leaflets with a strongly recurved or sometimes revolute margin, secondary veins inconspicuous on either side; the foliar glands, by their morphology and anatomy, are of a different type. An epitype is designated for the name Harpalyce and its type, H.formosa; the distribution of both new species and their close relatives is mapped, and an updated identification key is offered, to cater for all 16 currently recognised Cuban species.


ResumenSe describen dos nuevas especies de Harpalyce para Cuba oriental, H.revolutasp. nov. de las áreas de serpentina del norte y H.marianensissp. nov. de áreas de formaciones calcáreas del sur. Ambas se caracterizan por tener flores pequeñas, con estandarte de hasta 6 mm de largo y alas de hasta 3 mm de largo. Harpalycemarianensis se distingue además por sus ramas jóvenes fuertemente suberosas, de consistencia esponjosa, profundamente surcadas longitudinalmente, y los folíolos cubiertos abaxialmente por un tipo particular de glándulas sésiles anaranjadas. Harpalycerevoluta, por su parte, tiene folíolos suborbiculares o anchamente ovales, con margen fuertemente recurvado o hasta revoluto, con venas secundarias inconspicuas en ambas caras, y glándulas foliares, por su morphología y anatomía, son de un tipo distinto. Se designa un epitipo para el nombre Harpalyce y su tipo, H.formosa. Se presenta un mapa de distribución de las nuevas especies y las relacionadas con ellas y se ofrece una clave de identificación actualizada, que incluye las 16 especies cubanas actualmente reconocidas.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The genus Buxus has high levels of endemism in the Caribbean flora, with ~50 taxa. In Cuba, 82 % grow on ultramafic substrates and 59 % are nickel (Ni) accumulators or Ni hyperaccumulators. Hence it is an ideal model group to study if this diversification could be related to adaptation to ultramafic substrates and to Ni hyperaccumulation. METHODS: We generated a well-resolved molecular phylogeny, including nearly all of the Neotropical and Caribbean Buxus taxa. To obtain robust divergence times we tested for the effects of different calibration scenarios, and we reconstructed ancestral areas and ancestral character states. Phylogenetic trees were examined for trait-independent shifts in diversification rates and we used multi-state models to test for state-dependent speciation and extinction rates. Storms could have contributed to Cuba acting as a species pump and to Buxus reaching other Caribbean islands and northern South America'. KEY RESULTS: We found a Caribbean Buxus clade with Mexican ancestors, encompassing three major subclades, which started to radiate during the middle Miocene (13.25 Mya). Other Caribbean islands and northern South America were reached from ~3 Mya onwards. CONCLUSIONS: An evolutionary scenario is evident in which Buxus plants able to grow on ultramafic substrates by exaptation became ultramafic substrate endemics and evolved stepwise from Ni tolerance through Ni accumulation to Ni hyperaccumulation, which has triggered species diversification of Buxus in Cuba. Storms could have contributed to Cuba acting as a species pump and to Buxus reaching other Caribbean islands and northern South America'.

Introducción: La tasa de negativas a la donación entre el pueblo gitano es muy superior a la de cualquier otro grupo social. Objetivo: Analizar la actitud hacia la donación de los órganos propios entre la población gitana residente en España. Métodos: Tipo de estudio: estudio sociológico observacional nacional español estratificado por género y edad. Población a estudio: población gitana con edad≥15 años residente en España. Tamaño muestral: 1.253 encuestados. Instrumento de valoración: cuestionario validado de actitud hacia la donación de órganos para trasplante PCID-DTO Ríos. Trabajo de campo: selección aleatoria en función de la estratificación. Cumplimentación anónima y autoadministrada. Fue precisa la colaboración de personas de etnia gitana. Estadística: test de t de Student, χ2, Fisher y un análisis de regresión logística. Resultados: El grado de cumplimentación fue del 18,2% (n=228). De los que han cumplimentado el cuestionario, están a favor de la donación el 42,1% (n=96), indeciso el 30,3% (n=69) y en contra el 27,6% restante (n=63). De los 1.025 (81,8%) que rechazaron cumplimentar el cuestionario, 1.004 (98%) indicaron que era por miedo a hablar y rellenar un cuestionario que plantee el tema de la muerte y la donación de órganos tras fallecer. Si se considera que los que no han cumplimentado el cuestionario por miedo a la muerte y la donación de órganos tras fallecer no están a favor, los resultados serían los siguientes: el 7,8% (n=96) a favor de donar sus órganos frente al 92,2% (n=1.136) no a favor (en contra o indecisos). Conclusiones: La población gitana presenta un rechazo mayoritario a plantear el tema de la muerte y la donación de órganos tras fallecer. Estos hallazgos muestran que las campañas actuales para promover la donación de órganos no son efectivas en este grupo de población. (AU)


Introduction: The refusal rate for donating organs among the Roma people is much higher than that of any other social group. Objective: To analyze the attitude towards the donation of one's own organs among the Roma population living in Spain. Methods: Type of study: Spanish national observational sociological study stratified by gender and age. Study population: Roma population aged≥15 years living in Spain. Sample size: 1253 respondents. Assessment instrument: validated questionnaire on attitude towards organ donation for transplantation PCID-DTO Ríos. Field work: random selection based on stratification. Anonymous and self-administered completion. The collaboration of people of Roma ethnicity was required. Statistics: Student's t test, χ2, Fisher's exact test and a logistic regression analysis. Results: The degree of completion was 18.2% (n=228). Of those who completed the questionnaire, 42.1% (n=96) were in favor of donation, 30.3% (n=69) were undecided and the remaining 27.6% (n=63) were against it. Of the 1025 (81.8%) who declined to complete the questionnaire, 1004 (98%) indicated that it was for fear of speaking about and filling in a questionnaire that raises the issue of death and organ donation after death. If those who did not complete the questionnaire due to fear of death and donating organs after death are considered not in favor, the results would be as follows: 7.8% (n=96) in favor of donating their organs compared to 92.2% (n=1136) not in favor (against or undecided). Conclusions: A majority of the Roma population prefer not speak of death nor organ donation after death. These findings show that current campaigns to promote organ donation are not effective in this population group. (AU)

The sanitary emergency caused by COVID-19 has compromised countries and generated a worldwide health and economic crisis. To provide support to the countries' responses, numerous lines of research have been developed. The spotlight was put on effectively and rapidly diagnosing and predicting the evolution of the pandemic, one of the most challenging problems of the past months. This work contributes to the existing literature by developing a two-step methodology to analyze the transmission rate, designing models applied to territories with similar pandemic behavior characteristics. Virus transmission is considered as bacterial growth curves to understand the spread of the virus and to make predictions about its future evolution. Hence, an analytical clustering procedure is first applied to create groups of locations where the virus transmission rate behaved similarly in the different outbreaks. A curve decomposition process based on an iterative polynomial process is then applied, obtaining meaningful forecasting features. Information of the territories belonging to the same cluster is merged to build models capable of simultaneously predicting the 14-day incidence in several locations using Evolutionary Artificial Neural Networks. The methodology is applied to Andalusia (Spain), although it is applicable to any region across the world. Individual models trained for a specific territory are carried out for comparison purposes. The results demonstrate that this methodology achieves statistically similar, or even better, performance for most of the locations. In addition to being extremely competitive, the main advantage of the proposal lies in its complexity cost reduction. The total number of parameters to be estimated is reduced up to 93.51% for the short term and 93.31% for the mid-term forecasting, respectively. Moreover, the number of required models is reduced by 73.53% and 58.82% for the short- and mid-term forecasting horizons.

Cytoplasmic dynein, the primary retrograde microtubule transport motor within cells, must be activated for processive motility through the regulated assembly of a dynein-dynactin-adapter (DDA) complex. The interaction between dynein and dynactin was initially ascribed to the N-terminus of the dynein intermediate chain (IC) and a coiled-coil of the dynactin subunit p150 Glued . However, cryo-EM structures of DDA complexes have not resolve these regions of the IC and p150 Glued , raising questions about the importance of this interaction. The IC N-terminus (ICN) also interacts with the dynein regulators Nde1/Ndel1, which compete with p150 Glued for binding to ICN. Using a combination of approaches, we reveal that the ICN plays critical, evolutionarily conserved roles in DDA assembly by interacting with dynactin and Ndel1, the latter of which recruits the DDA assembly factor LIS1 to the dynein complex. In contrast to prior models, we find that LIS1 cannot simultaneously bind to Ndel1 and dynein, indicating that LIS1 must be handed off from Ndel1 to dynein in temporally discrete steps. Whereas exogenous Ndel1 or p150 Glued disrupts DDA complex assembly in vitro , neither perturbs preassembled DDA complexes, indicating that the IC is stably bound to p150 Glued within activated DDA complexes. Our study reveals previously unknown regulatory steps in the dynein activation pathway, and provides a more complete model for how the activities of LIS1/Ndel1 and dynactin/cargo-adapters are integrated to regulate dynein motor activity.

Activation functions lie at the core of every neural network model from shallow to deep convolutional neural networks. Their properties and characteristics shape the output range of each layer and, thus, their capabilities. Modern approaches rely mostly on a single function choice for the whole network, usually ReLU or other similar alternatives. In this work, we propose two new activation functions and analyze their properties and compare them with 17 different function proposals from recent literature on six distinct problems with different characteristics. The objective is to shed some light on their comparative performance. The results show that the proposed functions achieved better performance than the most commonly used ones.

BACKGROUND: Accurate epidemiological data are essential for the planning of policies aimed at the identification, prevention, and management of delirium. The reported occurrence of delirium in hospitalized patients varies widely among studies, ranging between 5% to more than 80% in the international literature. The exact occurrence in Latin America is not well described. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to conduct a systematic analysis of the published data on the epidemiology of delirium in hospitalized patients in Latin America. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review following PRISMA guidelines. Both MEDLINE and LILACS databases were searched for original research articles reporting the occurrence of delirium among adult hospitalized patients in Latin American countries. Studies including pediatric populations were excluded from this analysis. Two authors independently applied eligibility criteria, assessed quality, and extracted data. The corresponding authors of the original articles were contacted to obtain relevant information about the study when this was not present in the published manuscripts. RESULTS: Seven hundred and eighteen original articles were identified. After screening titles and abstracts, 149 studies were included in the final analysis. The occurrence of delirium varied depending on the clinical scenario: (1) in the general medico-surgical wards, it ranged from 2.1% to 60.4%, (2) in the Intensive Care Units (ICUs), from 9.6% to 94.8%, (3) in the post-operatory population, from 5.45% and 52.3%, and (4) it was found to be between 10.7% and 62% in the emergency department setting. The most used delirium assessment tools were the "Confusion Assessment Method" (CAM; in the general population), and the "Confusion Assessment Method for the ICU" (CAM-ICU). Fourteen out of 149 studies were conducted in clinical settings who actively implemented some form of non-pharmacological delirium prevention bundles, most of them as part of ICU sedation-analgesia protocols. CONCLUSION: Delirium occurs frequently in hospitalized patients in Latin America throughout a variety of clinical scenarios, including ICU, general wards, post-operatory populations, and among the emergency department setting. The CAM and the CAM-ICU are the most used delirium assessment tools. Bundles of non-pharmacological interventions to prevent delirium are not universally implemented.

BACKGROUND: The refusal rate for donating organs among the Roma people is much higher than that of any other social group. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the attitude towards the donation of one's own organs among the Roma population living in Spain. METHOD: . TYPE OF STUDY: Spanish national observational sociological study stratified by gender and age. STUDY POPULATION: Roma population aged ≥15 years living in Spain. SAMPLE SIZE: 1,253 respondents. Assessment instrument: Validated questionnaire on attitude towards organ donation for transplantation "PCID - DTO Ríos". Field work: Random selection based on stratification. Anonymous and self-administered completion. The collaboration of people of Roma ethnicity was required. STATISTICS: Student's t test, χ2, Fisher's exact test and a logistic regression analysis. RESULTS: The degree of completion was 18.2% (n = 228). Of those who completed the questionnaire, 42.1% (n = 96) were in favor of donation, 30.3% (n = 69) were undecided and the remaining 27.6% (n = 63) were against it. Of the 1,025 (81.8%) who declined to complete the questionnaire, 1,004 (98%) indicated that it was for fear of speaking about and filling in a questionnaire that raises the issue of death and organ donation after death. If those who did not complete the questionnaire due to fear of death and donating organs after death are considered not in favor, the results would be as follows: 7.8% (n = 96) in favor of donating their organs compared to 92.2% (n = 1166) not in favor (against or undecided). CONCLUSIONS: A majority of the Roma population prefer not speak of death nor organ donation after death. These findings show that current campaigns to promote organ donation are not effective in this population group.

BACKGROUND: The Cuban population residing in the state of Florida in the United States forms the largest population group of immigrants in that state. It has been described as a population with little awareness of organ donation. The objective is to analyze the factors that Cubans residing in the Florida refer to when expressing an unfavorable attitude toward organ donation and to determine the psychosocial factors associated with the attitude toward organ donation of this population group. METHODS: We performed a cross-sectional observational study. From the Proyecto Colaborativo Internacional Donante (International Donor Collaborative Project), a sample stratified by age and sex of Cubans residing in Florida (N = 1224) is obtained. The sample is analyzed using the validated questionnaire (PCID-DTO-RIOS). The reasons against organ donation were analyzed using a specific multiresponse item, with an open response option. For the analysis of the psychosocial variables, a logistic regression analysis is carried out. RESULTS: A total of 38.2% (n = 468) of the individuals under study declared themselves against organ donation. Of those who were against, the reasons stated were (1) leave the dead in peace (n = 440; 57.6%); (2) religious reasons (n = 192; 25.1%); (3) fear of mutilation (n = 160; 20.9%); (4) assertive refusal (n = 128; 16.8%); (5) apparent death (n = 16; 2.1%); and (6) other reasons (n = 764; 62.4%). CONCLUSIONS: The Cuban population residing in Florida who is against organ donation expresses various reasons. In addition, there are factors associated with the psychosocial profile toward organ donation of this important population group.

BACKGROUND: Xenotransplantation could be a source of organs for transplantation given the global organ shortage. It is important to know the opinion and variables that influence the acceptance of xenotransplantation of the professionals who will work in the genetic manipulation, production, and care of animals to be used for this purpose. OBJECTIVE: Analyze the influence of religious beliefs on the attitude toward xenotransplantation in veterinary students. METHODS: The study population included 2683 veterinary students from different courses and Spanish Universities. Instrument evaluation included a validated self-administered and anonymously completed questionnaire (PCID-XENOTx-Ríos). The survey was self-administered and completed anonymously. Consent to collaborate in the study was requested. Variables for the study included attitude toward xenotransplantation and toward religion, considering the following options: practicing Catholic, nonpracticing Catholic, non-Catholic, and atheist/agnostic. Statistics were performed using descriptive analysis, Student t test, -X2, and Fisher's exact test. RESULTS: Of the total number of participants, 7 did not answer this question. Those in favor of xenotransplantation were 92.9% (n = 247) of practicing Catholics, 92.8% (n = 812) of nonpracticing Catholics, and 87.3% (n = 69) of those professing another non-Catholic religion compared with 93.5% (n = 1361) of those considering themselves agnostic/atheist (P = .037). CONCLUSIONS: Religion is an influential factor in attitudes toward organ xenotransplantation. Those who practice Catholicism and those who consider themselves agnostic/atheist are more accepting of organ procurement for transplantation than those who practice other religious doctrines.
